The Dead Man

In Stave Four to page 93, the last of the three spirits come to visit Scrooge. The spirit was described as being shrouded in a deep black garment with nothing visible except for its outstretched hand. The spirit had a mysterious presence to it, and it was said that Scrooge was very scared of it. However, the spirit did not talk or say much. The spirit turned out to be the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. When the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come came to visit Scrooge, another moment regarding Scrooge's personality and attitude caught my eye. Again, in this reading, there was a moment that signified that Scrooge was starting to change for truly the better. In this moment, Scrooge told the spirit that even though he may be afraid of him, he said that he knows that the spirit's purpose is to do him good, and Scrooge said that he hopes to live to be another man from what he was. He said that he was prepared to bear the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come's company, and he was willing to do it with a thankful heart. There have been moments in the past staves where a moment similar to this has happened, and now coming close to the end of the book, it is clear that Scrooge is certainly willing to change his horrible personality and bad attitude and is going to change.
The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come took Scrooge to the city and one of the first moments within the future that the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come took Scrooge to was to listen to the conversations between business men. The first group of business men that the spirit took Scrooge to listen to were a group of men talking about the death of one man. Through the information heard in this conversation, I instantly thought that the person who died that the business men were talking about was Scrooge. What made me think that the business men were talking about Scrooge was because they were talking about how the man who died had a lot of money. With this, Scrooge popped into my mind. One man even said that it seems as if pretty much no one will go to the funeral which persuaded me to think that Scrooge was the one who died even more since I assume that his funeral is going to be similar to or even worse to Marley's because of how his rude, mean, and greedy personality impacted the people around him. After listening to another conversation, the spirit then took Scrooge to a moment in the future where there were two women, one of which went by the name of Mrs. Dilber,  a man, and another man who went by the name of Joe. In this scene, they were again talking about the death of the man that was talked about by the business men. Again, I still think that this man is Scrooge since the lady talked about the man's money and him being alone. The two women then had Joe look through their bundles, and it seemed like the contents from their bundles came from the dead man that was being talked about in this stave.
After reading this, I believe that the dead man that was the center of talk in this reading is Scrooge. Based on what I've read in this reading, the pieces of information that I have heard from the different conversations among everyone relates and fits very well with Scrooge and his current life before being visited by the spirits. Maybe the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is trying to tell Scrooge that he could end up dead if he doesn't change his ways? The boy that Scrooge saw under the Ghost of Christmas Present's robe siginified ignorance, and on his forehead, the word "doom" was written signifying that ignorance can lead to one's doom just like in To Kill a Mockingbird. We did after all, talk about that if Scrooge doesn't change, it will not only lead to his doom, but it will also lead to Tiny Tim's doom. With this, I am pretty sure that this dead man that everyone is talking about is Scrooge. Who do you think the man is?

Scrooge when he saw the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come

  1. Scrooge is really showing signs of him starting to change throughout the last few staves, which is good for him, because if he kept living his bad ways, he'd be going to Hell. But now he's starting to change for the better, so he still has a chance to make it to heaven. I also first thought right away that in all the scenes when they were talking about a person who had died, that it was Scrooge. When reading the stave, I had thought to myself that the ghost was just showing Scrooge scenes that would happen after he was dead, if he continued to live his life the way he has been living it for decades too.
