Scrooge and Fan

This chapter starts with Scrooge the next night spending most of his time after work was done contemplating if what he saw was a dream or real. He is debating it back and forth and finally goes to sleep at 2:00 A.M. However the clock was stuck at twelve A.M. when he tried to sleep. He tried to sleep though could not and finally remembered Jacob Marley said another ghost would visit him when the clock hit one. Scrooge already couldn't sleep so waited. It hit one nothing happened he felt triumphant until lights shined the curtains of Scrooge's bed flew off. The ghost of Christmas past had a very supernatural appearance looking young and old simultaneously. There was a clear jet of light from the crown if its head. The ghost led Scrooge through past Christmases, when he was a boy left alone. Another Christmas where his sister tried to lead him to his mean old father pretending he changed. Scrooge is getting really excited especially with people like Ali Baba. Scrooge gets really excited as he is about to talk to Fezziwig.
Scrooge's sister died giving birth to a child. Scrooge rarely ever purposefully tries to assosciate himself with him. We are told in this chapter that Scrooge's sister's name is Fan and that she died a woman and gave birth to a son. Though this same son is always cheery in greeting his uncle Scrooge and always invites him for dinner even though he rejects the invitation every year on Christmas in a rather humiliating way. He never wants to do anything for the only person that will show up to his funeral. Year after year he denies him in his greetings I think it might be that he lost his sister and in the cause gained a nephew. Even though it is through no means the nephew's fault Scrooge seems to harbor resentment for that and never attempts at assosciating with him and denies his attempts. Scrooge for this reason does not spend time with him and blames him consciously or subconsciously. He was very close with his sister and Fan was the kindest person he ever knew.

  1. Nice summary in your first paragraph, well done on that. It's true that Scrooge probably shuns Fred so much because he blames Fred for Fan's death. He loved Fan very much, and to lose the only person who you've ever loved and who's ever loved you pretty much your whole life must be really sad. You're right though that it's not Fred's fault, and Scrooge shouldn't really harbor resentment for that and therefore always turning down Fred's happiness and kindness to him. It does seem like he doesn't want to associate himself with Fred, even though year after year Fred cheerily greets his uncle and invites him for Christmas dinner. Good job on the summary, and I liked how you talked about Scrooge and Fred's nearly nonexistent relationship.

  2. You had a good summary in the beginning stating how he was working late, until two, and he was going to sleep a 12. Also good how you pointed out that he remembered that the spirit was coming and he couldn't get to sleep, also mentioning the description of the spirit. Pointing out the points where Scrooge got especially xcite, like with Ali Baba and Fezziwig. I also agree that Scrooge shouldn't treat Fred the way he does and that Fred shouldn't be to blame for what happened to Fan.
